I'm trying to find the transfer case under my 97 disco automatic so I can replace the fluid. I did the differentials yesterday and they went fine, although it was in desperate need of a change. I was going to change the transfer case fluid too, but I looked and looked and couldn't find anything under my car that looked like what I thought it would look like. Where exactly is it located and what tools do I need to remove the bolts? I could not find it at all. The picture I have in the repair manual just shows a close up of it and it's a drawing so it doesn't help much lol.

I stole this picture off of a google image search, some website comparing stock changes between D1 and D2...anyway....

the transfer case is part of that metal part with the 'stamped squares'....its more on the passenger side (right) side of the lower chassis area...but ya, its definately the silver metal oblong box shaped thing with all the raised squares...the drain plug is the lowest one you can find on the t/c, and the fill plug is on the drivers side waaaay up on the transfer case...hope that helps a bit...too lazy to get a better picture...http://www.cs.unc.edu/~zhangh/LR/pics/DI_joint_fr_s.JPG

Ahhhh! Okay, there it is. That was actually what I thought it might be, but it seemed far away from the drivers seat area, but yesterday I was looking and saw that thing with the squares and a drain bolt and I thought it looked like that might be it. Thanks again for the help! I'm gonna try changing out the fluid today.

Update: With the help of Nhess I located the transfer case and successfully changed the oil. Besides having trouble getting a wrench up into the fill plug and a little difficulty getting fluid up there, it went pretty well. I tried using a funnel for a minute until I spilled oil all down my arm, so then I decided I would stick with my pump tool. It shifts in to low and high range really smoothly now. The old oil was super black. My disco is running really good so far and I'm only about 1/2 done with my "big" tune up.
