Carseats in Third Row

Is it safe to put car seats in the third row of an LR3? I am getting ready to go on a long road trip with my three kids in car seats, and it would be good to space them out a bit. But, only if it is safe, of course.

I don't even know how to put up the 3rd row in mine...but is there the LATCH system back there? If so, I think it would be ok. If not, no...

There's no latch system in the 3rd row, so you'll need to belt the car seat(s) in - remember to use retaining clips/locks on the seat belts to keep everything firmly in place! There are anchor points for the rear tether strap for each seat - the anchor points are under the lip of the floor that runs along the tailgate. I put kids in the rear occasionally - narrower car seats help if you are going to put two back there; I've never done in on a long trip, just around town (ie, when out with friends that also have kids), but presumably it's a comfortable there as in the second row...

its safe. i put my kids back there all the time.. its much quieter than the middle row

Actually, there is a problem with the 3rd row in the LR3. It is in no way as safe as the second row. If you look at the top of the seat backs (headrest area) and measure from that to the rear window, it is less than 18". 18" is the bare minimum reccomended. The problem is that in an accident, there won't be enough room for the crumple zone to compress and will likley impinge on the space taken up by back of the 3rd row seats. . .and your kids. . .

If I had a choice, I would put as many across the 2nd row as possible. It is safer than the 3rd row.

I wasn't going to chime in because I don't have kids, but I totally agree with schafari. I'd want my kids smack in the middle of the truck to get as much energy absorption as possible in the event of an accident. If I only had one I'd put him in the middle of the second row.

It is as safe as any third row and safer than most. The second row is likely safer in some situations but it is largely an arguement of maybes. If having everone comfortable and content decreases the chance for driver distraction then I would think that would have to factor in as well. Personally on long trips I throw one of the my three back there otherwise the temptation to **** the wheel into oncoming traffic becomes too great once the he's looking at me/she's touching my stuff starts up.

---in which case the third row would likely be the safest place in the truck.
