I figured I would post this thread over here since I have 19" tires on my LR3 and most LR3 owners are running 18" tires. Has anybody driven the Cooper Zeons in winter? I now know that they are a great beach tire but I have some concerns about using them in winter. I'm sure they will provide traction but winter tires are all about braking and turning on snow, ice & slush. It's time to replace the Nokian Hakka R tires we had on the LR3 the last 4 winters. Hakka's were great in deep snow and on ice but not so great in the rain and really scary on slush. May go with the Pirelli ice & snow or Nokian WRG2 for better hydroplaning resistance in winter.

I have the wrg2's on my LR4 and they are a great tire...

I think the Coopers would be a better offroad tire, and probably good in deep snow when fairly new, but they don't have the quantity of sipes required for ice and packed snow. The wrg2's are not going to be quite as good as a full Hakka in the winter, but they are still great in the rain, dry and even during this super hot summer we have had. The wrgs2's are also higher speed rated, although probably not that big of a deal on the LR4. I ran the old wr's on a number of vehicles and I think the new ones are even better.

P.S. I had the Pirelli ice & snow on my last 2 full sized RR's (20" no wr's avail.) and my 2010 LR4 and they are not nearly as nice as the wr's.

I ran Pirelli Ice & Snow in 20s on our LR4 last winter. They were good in ice, but not great in snow above 3 inches unplowed... I was glad to see that Blizzak WS-60s are now in a 20 inch config for the LR4, so we have those on order...

Can't speak to Cooper, but I have tried most winter tires (except for Nokians) and think Bridgestone Blizzaks are by far the best. For turning in snow, the trick is to have a sharp outer edge of rubber (close to 90 degrees with some tread depth). That is what grips in the turns. I think tire compound have come a long way of late, as most are great on ice... But you really need that outer edge for high speeds turning in slush and snow to get grip.

If I still lived in Maine, I would probably run something like the Coopers in the summer and have an extra set of wheels with Blizzaks or Hakkas for the winter. Last winter here in Western PA, we barely had any winter, so the WR's were fine.

These guys have OEM take offs for pretty good prices:

Good point. We used to run dedicated winter & summer tires, but with the long winters here and occassional summer snow - we decided to run winters all year long on our SUVs. We have been doing that for the last 6 years, and they tires perform well. Granted, winter tires are a bit spongy in Vegas during summer temps of 120 degrees - but they still handle well enough.
