My son has a freelander 5dr s/wagon1.8si 1999 and it has been checked over to find cause of the ignition cutting out while driving. No fault showed up on diagnostic check and it was hinted it could be a fuel pump problem,it only seems to occur during long journey(approx 1hr) and is usually ok on 1/2 hour or shorter trips. When it cuts out it wont start unless left for 2 -3 minutes and then is ok for about a mile or so i would be obliged if anyone knows of possible cause to help me out . Many Thanks Tom Burnett.

Check out the coil it could be on the way out. When they heat up too much, they break down. Because you stopped for a few minutes, it had so time to cool down allowing you to continue for a little while. FWIW, I always carry a spare after suffering a complete failure once out in the boonies.
