I'm an owner of a handme-down 98 Disco I since last December. The previous owner dismantled the front drive shaft cause a friend told him that since there was no use of the four-wheel drive here in Kuwait, better to remove it. And the friend said that the front drive was giving load or resistance to the engine. Is there a problem of not re-mounting the front shaft? There is a clanking sound when shifting from P to R and from R to D.

The noise is probably normal, the issue will be that you have to disengage the CDL (center diff lock) when you install the driveshaft or you will have major issues. Also make sure everything is all lubed up and happy before install.

There are times that the Disco will not roll on a level ground when shifted to D or R or there is a feeling of resistance in the engine while driving although no noise from the tranny.

Sounds like you may have some transfer case issues if it doesn't move in gear on occasion.

The vehicle in not designed to be driven without both driveshafts, so I am not sure what issues may arise if one has been removed for a long period of time.

Normally, while on P and shifted to D and then release the brake the Disco will move slowly without stepping on the accelerator. Same thing with P and shifting to R. But there are times that I need to step on the accelerator even moving for a few inches.
