Hello all,

My '97 4.0 has developed an engine squeal that increases with acceleration and stops when I let up off the accelerator. It also seems to have a bit of a vibration of the steering wheel. Would appreciate if anyone could share an idea of what is happening.

Thanks in advance.

Squeal is probably the belt tensioner depending on mileage vibration could be tire balancing issues...

But this all depends on mileage and maintenance history.

Thanks Joey,

My mileage is about 161,000. I am on point with maintainance over the years. I am due soon, though. I am on vacation and I'm about 250 miles from my regular (and excellent) shop. Just developed this squeal yesterday. Would hate to take into dealer. Is there anyway to adjust tension?

My problem is sounding more like a u-joint problem. Anyone have any idea what the repair cost would be?

engine squeal is not normally a u-joint issue, but if you feel it is the u-joint I WOULDN'T drive it till you fix it. if the U-joint comes apart you may be buying a new transmission.

Cost varies from shop to shop, but shouldn't be more then $120
