fan problem?

I have a 98' Disco that has a kind of bearing/rattling sound coming from the front of the engine. Is it possible the bearings on the fan have gone bad. Any one had any problems like this?

hmm...mine was making a sound like what you describe as my alternator was dying....so keep an eye on that in the next few days, if your tachometer (you know the RPM gauge, i dont want to talk down to you, but some people get confused) drops to zero while driving then regains the correct speed, it is the alternator going bad on you....mine did this once on a long drive home, the tach was at zero, the battery warning light was lighting up, and the engine was running like trash....other than that it MIGHT be your fan bearings, but dont know what or why they would go crazy on you

You can check this real easy with either a mechanics stethiscope or a long (real long) screwdriver.

at idle... place the screw driver or stethiscope tip on the water pump, Alternator, and the idle pulley, and place the other end to your ear... I am sure you will find the issue real fast, just listen.

Took the fan belt off and fan pulley wobbles like crazy. Alot of play. Could it be the fan clutch or bearings in water pump? Also how do you take the fan pully off the water pump?

As far as I know (never done this yet) but the it would be best to just replace the water pump if it is that bad.

Was the bearings on rod coming out of waterpump. Replaced water pump but having a hard time getting pully and fan off old pump. Any ideas?

When I did it (of course it still had the belt on....) I used a borrowed tool from NAPA once, a tool from the local ford dealer then next time, and then bought a 4 sized wrench at a bicycle shop for the last two times.

I remove my fan in the winter, just don't like wasting the gas.
