I'm ordering johnson rods in order to fit some 285/65R18 BFGoodrich AT tires for my new Discovery 4.

The question for those who already changed to larger size tires is: Do you change all 5 tires? If so, does the large tire fit in the spare space?

I'm jealous..You guys are lucky you get that option as we in the states can only do 19" or 20" oem. We can get 18" only through compmotive special wheels due to our large brakes.

You can compare the size with oem 20" or 19" wheel/tire diameter as full-size spares fit in the spare space on the HD option. Check out this site as it gives you a visual difference.

whether to get a 5th wheel/tire is up to you but if you plan on offroading, I say get the 5th wheel/tire. I watched a friend blow a tire on a trail and it freaked me out because I have a donut(mini-spare). I found a 19" wheel on internet and plan on putting one of my used contis on it when I buy my new tires next month.

I do have a full size spare, but it's a 255/60R18. Do you think it would do as a spare or I should have to replace it with a 285/65R18?

The tire diameter for a 255/55R19 (U.S. LR4) and for a 255/60R18 (Discovery 4) is the same: 30.04". A 285/65R18 will measure 32.6" in diameter. This is 2.5 inches larger which requires johnson rods for sure but I am trying to figure out if a spare that size would fit...

It looks like LR keeps the same diameter for all wheel/tire combos as the 20" is 255/50r20". I would think the 2.5" difference is not a good idea as it could mess up your balance/suspension. Since you have a full size spare, you could measure the gaps at the most narrow points to see if you have roughly an inch and a qtr space.

There is a poster on here named Joane who is running those 18" I compmotive wheels i mentioned earlier and she running same BFs at 265/65r18 that don't require the johnson rods. She may be worth PM-ing as she may have tried the larger size and has a reason for 265/65s.

Here is a link to here write up where at the bottom of the page is a link to pics of here awesome rig in these new "boots" off roading in Sedona.

Thanks for the info! I think I'll set out to look for some 265/65R18 AT tires.
