With mixed feelings, I've began the search to replace my 1999 D2. Ownership has been unlike any other vehicle I've ever owned. The closest thing I can think of in comparison is being with a beautiful, wild, crazy girl. She may be irritating, to the point you want to gouge out your own eyes, but there are those moments where she can make you feel more alive, more real, and inspire you to be a better man than you really are.

Funny how perspective changes....I purchased for utility, but I now see that the Land Rover really should be considered a high-performance sports car. Don't laugh; consider that it requires careful attention to maintenance, exhibits extraordinary prowness in its element (slogging through knee-deep mud or pulling Jeeps out of snowbanks) and, frankly isn't a vehicle for everyone.

Very few vehicles have "character" anymore. Some (including me) want their cars to have an edge, a certain roughness. I purchased one of the first 1997 Vettes that came off the line and traded it a year later because it was about as much fun as driving a fast Toyota Corolla...no spirit, no fun. My commute is long and life is too short to waste it in a boring car.

So, any ideas on a replacement?

Depends on what you really want... my next car looks to be a 540iA BMW Sport. should make a very nice daily driver. But I am still keeping my Rover... can't imagine driving in snow without it, or mud for that matter.

Looking at a couple of different vehicles:

08 Dodge 1500 Maxicab with 5.7 Hemi. It is huge:)

08 Silverado 1500 with 5.3. Not as big as the Dodge and gets better MPG.

Anyone have any experience with either?

With lifetime power train warranty... why would anyone not go with the Dodge? But I would choose a Diesel.

Disaster averted

Well Joey, even though I was offered what I consider a very good deal on a 07 Chevy, I just can't bring myself to trade the Rover. (I must be barking mad.)

Frankly, with the economy on the verge of tanking, I'm afraid to take on any debt. So, I'm counting on this August group of enthusiasts to help me get another 5 years out of the old girl.

My new goal is to be the first person to get a D2 to 200,000 miles on the original engine:biggrin:

I have 135k on mine right now... D1... Of course as a precaution I just ordered a Fuel pump to swap out next week...

I also ordered all new lug nuts without the stupid caps.

Can't wait to change those out.
