haha, so here's what the Tire shop told me I need to "fix"

So I take my disco 1 to get the tires rotated yesterday. I have two old tires on it that right away they say are going to blow out on me because they're really cracked. So I'm like, okay, I need new tires, no big deal. Then they rotate them and they tell me there's stuff I need to do: Replace the brakes... pads, rotors, and CALIPERS?? Replace the calipers? Come on, this is ridiculous. Does anyone ever replace calipers? Where would they even sell calipers? lol. Then they tell me I need new shocks. Then they tell me I need to repack the bearings. Then they tell me my powersteering is leaking. Sheesh... All I wanted was the tires rotated, now I'm looking at like $1000 or more in parts alone. (I can do most of the work myself, which they didn't know). What is really going on?

PS leaking I can see, this is normal.

Brakes and pads, tend to go out every 25 - 35 thousand miles.

Rotors, you might make on two sets of brake pads if you are careful (do not have them turned)

Calipers... they are smoking something. Almost never do you need to replace calipers, don't get me wrong it can happen, but not very often.

Not to be a pain, but it is always best to replace all four tires at once on any All-Wheel drive vehicle... remember this isn't a normal 4-wheel drive, you have power to all wheels at all times, different sized tires will cause issues with your drive train.

See that's what I thought. I've never had any problem with my brakes at all and now they're telling me to replace perfectly good calipers! I could see replacing the little springs inside the calipers, but the calipers themselves seem fine. I'm replacing the 2 tires this week or so. I just didn't have the cash to do all 4 when I had a flat a little while ago.

Did ya ask them HOW they knew the calipers were bad?
I had some calipers go bad on me once (i.e. they siezed). The first indication I had was excessive brake dust on the wheels. Second, the car was pulling hard to one side while driving, not braking. Third was a nasty hot brake smell while driving, even though I hadn't done any heavy braking. Thats when I pulled to the curb to check it out. I touched the lug nuts to see how warm they were and I ended up getting burned fingers. OUCH! I have even seen tires catch on fire and the whole vehicle goes up in flames. Not pretty.

I hear ya. He would have better odds at winning the lottery!!! I guessing that the shop people saw $$$$ when the Rover pulled up and thought they could pull a fast one.

when I owned my jeep (BLR - before my LR)...same thing - get the tires rotated - they came back and said I needed brakes and other things I dont recall right now - the as@#$%le didnt know I do all the work on my car myself and just change the brakes about 15k ago - after I told him that he shut his mouth and pulled my car out and didnt say one word - - I have gotten to the point I dont trust anyone unless I have delt with them for years

seems those Jiffy Lube type places and Just tire type places are notorius for this and have even been busted by hidden cameras ripping people off - like inside edition and such

I just had to change one rear caliper on my 01 Disco. Was a little over a $100 for the kit version (includes all hardware). Took 20 mins. to install. It's rare for one to fail, but it does happen.

Okay cool. I guess it's possible then maybe 1 or 2 of the calipers need replacing, but I couldn't believe my ears when they said I need new calipers in general haha. I don't trust mechanics for the most part, and since I don't have a lot of spare cash, that's probably for the best. I'm a do-it-yourselfer. I did most of the tune up work on my disco since I got it, and the brakes and suspension are on my list of things to do in the not too distant future, but like I said, I can't afford to pay someone $1000 to do the brakes when I know for a fact I could put the top of the line stuff on myself for under $500.
