has anyone upgraded to this metal tranny pan?

Considering doing this myself in about 10,000-miles. The Powerful UK version looked less expensive even with shipping. One thing I noticed from the Powerful UK video switching out the pan (sump) was that the drain plug has a tall interior "collar" so there would still be a significant amount of ATF draining when you drop the pan itself.

Just did this service in February with the Atlantic British source parts (Item: ATFCKOMEWFL; price: $419.95)...apparently they are actually from Brit Part. There are lots of videos and information about this ZF service (in my case the 6HP) and the only issue we had was with the gasket, which is some odd paper-like substance (with a really low torque). We ended up using an RTV / silicon based gasket-maker because we didn't want to have any issues with leaks. So far, so good...

Yep, they are the preferred pan setup for maintenance. For the gasket, lubelocker makes a silicone gasket that is much better than the paper.

I considered going to the metal pan when I first replaced the factory pan many years back. The tranny shop here that understood the ZF transmissions (that was many years back) suggested I remain with the plastic pan due to the colder winter weather we have up here. The feeling was the plastic pan held the heat better than the metal pan, and hence for winter driving, that would be helpful.

I now have 477,000 km (296,000 miles) on my 3 and other than regular oil and pan changes, all seems OK so far.

Regardless, new oil and pan/filters every so often are a must regardless of metal or plastic.

My local Land Rover mechanic recommended against the metal pan as he had issues in the past. Not sure which one he used, though others have reported issues with the gasket not sealing or the mating surface and holes not aligning nicely.

Think I am going to stick with the plastic ZF pan/filter.

Not exactly apples to apples, but I have 85k+ miles on my LR3 metal pan

Zero leaks or issues - great decision if you DIY service

edit: should have mentioned mine is genuine ZF kit, from thectsc . com
