I have a 1997 Discovery with an intermittent steering or turning problem. At first I thought it was a matter of getting used to the car. The other night I could barely muscle the car around a right hand turn and almost went over a cliff. No warning lights are on and it has only done that once. Of course I haven't driven it again. I don't even want to drive it to the shop. I have only noticed it during right turns or curves. Any idea what the problem is?

First check the PS fluid level, then also check to make sure the Steering damper hasn't been crushed. Check all the linkage under the vehicle for bad bends or something that just doesn't look right. you can also jack up the front end and check the steering off the ground and watch for anything out of the ordinary.

remember to chock the rear wheels and use jack stands, so we don't read about you in the paper.

It has 87000 miles and has just had its 90000 mile service. The mechanic just called and can not find anything wrong. He is keeping it another day to drive around and see if it will happen again. Any new ideas?

me too

steering would get really tough and then begin to work. got worse. started checking around and the ps pump was leaking then started leaking more. leaking around the gasket. couldnt get a new gasket. gasket maker wouldnt hold. ordered a new pump. $399.99. it will take a week to get here. oh yeah, cross threaded the pressure hose fitting in the bottom of the pump another $50. whew these parts are overpriced.hope the pump is the only thing wrong not the steering box too.(ANYONE KNOW WHAT TAKES PS FLUID OUT OF CLOTHES HA HA)
