Intro and plea for help!!!

Hi, new guy here... I have a 1996 disco 1. I am trying to replace the rear door hinges. All was going fine until I tried to remove the two fasteners unique to the bottom hinge on the edge of the door itself. These fastners look something like rivets but are solid in the center. I tried drilling out the first one and nearly lost a finger. Does anyone know how to get these out and what they are so I can get them replaced?
