I gotta say. . .It looks like a lot of work for very little benefit. The iPod I have fits perfectly in the little slot on the center console, and I have bascially zero wires exposed. Sound is better than CD. Belkin seems the way to go.

Just a FYI: I recently confirmed that the volume is no more matched than any iPod using audio off the dock connector. So, the $30 Belkin solution is the same loudness/quality. What do you expect, since it just uses the same factory AUX input? Oh, well.
Grommet, that makes perfect sense.
The volume level will be the same because the line level output on the iPod dock connector is fixed and may vary based on the recording level of a particular song. The advantages for using the dock connector are:
1. Charging
2. a cleaner more stable output
3. and iPod controls (where applicable)

The factory AUX input is processed by the same preamp circuitry as that of the CD player, therefore it has the same volume potential. The output level is directly related to the input level, therefore to achieve a higher output level one must increase the input which is achievable with a line driver.
