I can see your point on comparing a Freelander to a Honda. I was thinking more of the other Land Rovers.
Still, when people do this they aren't wondering about the failure rate per part. They want to know the failure rate for the vehicle as a whole. If they buy a less complex vehicle, then they must not have needed the additional complexity. Those who actually need everything a Land Rover provides will be comparing it to other luxury brands.
You say "bad rap" as if the results are undeserved. If a car requires many repairs, it deserves to have a reputation for requiring many repairs.
You didn't simply say "other luxury brands." You said Lexus. I can only recall one instance where a Lexus model received a subpar reliability score, and it was the GS 300 AWD for a single model year. Not quite a "bad rap."
Not saying you shouldn't love your Land Rover. But does loving something mean that it must not have any flaws, or at least have no perceived flaws? Opinions on this issue are split, even with my own household.
