Greetings...

I drive a '96 Disco...Zero Modifications... With 142K Miles..

While driving interstate speeds, my wife noticed the truck overheating as a result of the steam/smoke from under the hood. I do not know how long she drove with it too hot, or how long it took her to stop.

The upper radiator hose was obviously shredded. It blew apart nearest to where it enters the engine.

As i start to make what I am sure will be a fast repair, I noticed what sure seems to be a lot of oil around where it blew and even inside the fittings like where it attaches to the radiator... I know I'm a little dense, but allow me a stupid question...

Antifreeze is the only fluid that should be coming out of the radiator or any of the hoses, correct?

Should i just relax, attach the new hose and refill the fluids or do i need to flush the system and a bunch of other stuff? Or do you think I have cause for alarm?

Thanks!

Before you read below, are we talking a lot of oil, or just a little oil that may have washed off the engine into the hose from the steam?

If a lot read below. If a little I would have the engine checked just to make sure.

Alarm would be one word I would use. If you have oil coming out of your radiator hose, you are in for a costly repair. Sounds like it over heated and slipped a liner in the cylinder. Basically if what I am reading is correct. You may be better off looking for a used engine or another vehicle.

The engine is indeed shot according to my shop... Something about compression gas test failing??? Anyway, I trust this guy completely so i am on the hunt for a new/used/rebuilt/remanufactured engine for my baby... Any recommendations as to a source? I live in Atlanta and will be checking with Coventry West on Monday, but I'm not wanting to pay top price!
Thanks!
