Hi all. I just purchased a 2008 LR3 with 65k miles. The car has been fully serviced by a dealer its entire life and received its 60k mile service. Today I took it offroad for the first time. Before going off, I put the car in neutral and swtiched it to low range. I then went forward at very low speed on a mixture of grass, wet dirt and rocks (I was in "mud" mode). A few times, there was a knocking sounds coming from the front wheels / steering column area. The level of noise and sound was similar to if a stick was caught in the wheels (I confirmed multiple times that nothing was stuck). I stopped the car and switched it into high gear and continued down the road for a bit, then put it back into low gear. This time there were no noises at all and the care performed wonderfully. Looking back on it, the sound and feel was somewhat similar to ABS kicking in in some of my other cars. Could this have been the case? I have done searches on the forum to see if there any threads that apply to this, but have not found any. Should I be worried about this noise? Thanks!

Unless it engages automatically, I did not turn it on. As I said, the sound went away after I stopped and went back to high then back to low. Thanks for the reply!

You guys were right -- Hill descent was on. I will not be making that mistake again...

Thanks

Hill descent has it's purpose, not a mistake. Let it engage where it needs to or turn it if you feel like controlling the rig ;)

...it's good to have when you could cross-axle so that free-wheel-spin can be controlled. Also, any hill climb, in case you have a failed hill climb (it does happen, even in an LR3) HDC is a good thing to have.
