Hi, i used the search function and found a thread with this topic....but it did not seem to help out much...so..

My 97 Disco, every once in awhile, under 15-20MPH, i get a squealy sort of sound that seems to be from the transfer case but when i open the door it seems like its coming from my left rear wheel. When i come to a stop it stops, but sometimes it doesnt squeal at all. It is sort of a _whine whine whine whine whiiiiiiiiine whiine_ like random intervals sometimes, but also some long ones (noticed earlier that i CAN actually make it stop squealing if i hit the brakes sometimes also). It also sometimes continues even after i have begun accelerating, but not for long, usually after about 20MPH it stops. . But, when i keep the brake pedal pushed so that the vehicle just creeps from/to a standstill, it feels like something is binding and dragging--a little vibration sensation along with a sound of metal dragging (think submarine movie when the pressure is getting too great for the body, the sound the metal makes as it implodes). This could be a brake too tight, do you think?

Any ideas? If you think its the pads, should i just take my left rear tire off and visually inspect it? Do you think its U-joints (how do i check these/what are they?) Do you think its mudshield near tire or t-case (again, how to check/what are these?). Any help would be great, i do not want to disrespect my Landy by ignoring any sounds....and make her mad at me

[ADD]
Would changing tranny and t-case fluids help out the 'common' shift to reverse clunk/shudder?

Part 3...my CDL light does not always come on, does it really matter?

Sorry for so long of a post, but i wanted to put as much info out as i can think of so you rovergeniuses could help me, i am still a n00b, just 4 months as an owner--and just 20 years old with little experience outside of my lil 96 taurus lol...

Can you feel vibration in the pedal? Funny thing is - on my Disco, I can never really 'feel' it, but I can definately hear them in the rear. It's definately fooled me into thinking the sound has been coming from elsewhere

Pads can rub when they are down to the bone metal... to just narrow it down, I'd take off the rear wheels and visually inspect the pads. Look for uneven / even wear, and how big the actual pad is in the caliper. I'd almost put money on it though, and by the time you've taken off the wheels 1/2 the brake job has been done so just buy rear pads and do 'em anyways. My rears & fronts eat pads for breakfast on my Disco II. But then I do a ton of driving, and take her down fat mountains alot too

Without looking, the shift to reverse shutter sounds like the driveshaft to me. Have your driveshaft inspected, or replace it with a better aftermarket one from Tom Woods > http://www.4xshaft.com/Landrover.html

P.S., you're in Sac-to too, right? :bandit:

Well, i was reading there on the Tom Woods Custom DriveShaft website that "Many tims you can have a U-joint that is beginning to seize up and you'll not be able to observe any play in the joint. When this happens you may be able to see a rusty oxidization on the U-joint around the bearing cap seals. You might also be able to hear a squeaking noise while driving the vehicle that will start out slow and cycle faster as the vehicle moves faster. The squeaking may also dissappear at a high speed." That almost describes what I have been feeling/hearing. I will try to look under the truck for any play, and then for any rust on the U-joints. It is hard to really work on it tho, because i am at my apartment at college and dont have the resources to get any work started probably until the weekend. I will look more into the driveshafts, it just sucks becuase i just spent 700 on tires and am not looking forward to 700 more into the driveshafts but you gotta do what you gotta do...(still gotta get the windows tinted too, but mechanical problems take precidence)

--capt hook--i am in sacramento most of the time, going to college up here, usually gone the weekends but not all....

Sounds like we're in the same boat. No money and a Rover that thows us problems. LoL - if you want to get a better local deal, check out Specialized British Recycling

Specialized British Recycling

Rancho Cordova, California 95742

Local phone: (916) 638-7575

Can you see play in the shaft? Or is it just noisy?

Call the above, they'll have one off another D1 cheap.... then get back at me @ [email protected]. Hey I'm also in Sac, it might be a one-day wrencher in my warehouse, I have a big air compressor we can use.

btw, that guy who has a window tint business his # is 916-201-2818. Just file it away and when you've got time to tint give him a ring

Im pretty sure its your brake pads. Ive got the same problem. It could be caused by residual pressure on the pistons in your callipers. I take the pads off and shave the sides down (rounded) all along the edges of the pad. It cures it untill they need shaved again. Im waiting for my tax return so I can upgrade to some drilled and slotted rotors. Hopefully that will fix it for good.

well...looked under the big girl and well, the u-joints and drive shafts seem fine...barely noticable play torsionally on the rear shaft and pretty much zero movement on the front. so i am kinda thinking its not them thats the sound issue. will update again when i check the rear brakes this weekend. i dont know if really matters to anyone else and i dont like to bump my own threads, but in case anyone has this issue later they can use all this for reference..haha

It's good to post a follow up, so newbies can figure this stuff out too. Take off those rear wheels and check the pads, they're prob. down to the metal

Alright, well removed the offending wheel, it sounds like a rusty swingset sometimes at start or stop (like the truck just BAAAAAAARELY moves, it sounds like a rusty swingset from the left rear wheel), so talking to some neighbors sounds like it might be a loose caliper perhaps dragging on the rotor and could lead to the pads making the intermittent squeal. I also noticed the rotoflex is about shot, so that too could be making the noise. I shall try to get a replacement rotoflex and do a new pads all round/maybe new rotors too brake job and I will update as to if anything solves it...thanks!

You might want to rebuild your callipers while your at it. You may have a piston sticking. Its fairly easy to do, and you can get a rebuild set at most shops.
