Just got back from a vacation down in Cape Hatteras...which always proves to be a great place for the rover. These days I am very comfortable with beach driving and I'll take the LR3 through the softest sand with confidence. (I do drop the tire pressure and leave it dropped for the week...makes for a cushy soft road ride but I'm careful not to take any hard turns on pavement lest I roll one of those low profile Michilins off the rim!). This trip I even got to pull someone's ********* van out of the sand. The rover did great...I put it in 4 Low and pretty much just took my foot off the brake, applied a little gas, and the rover pulled out the van without any noticeable effort.

I was too busy playing to take any vanity photos of the LR3, but it found its way into a couple shots I included below;

Rigging up my kite for an ocean session.

Carted myself, gear, and several people out to a private beach for our last session before heading home. Private because it is an out of the way, soft, wet road that keeps the AWD "cars" from making the trek.

We also drove out to the tip of Cape Hatteras for the last time anyone will be out there in a couple months. This major tourist attraction was just closed to all access due to a lawsuit the National Audubon Society filed against the park service. We drove out and talked to a ranger. Found out that the cape was likely to be closed off for a couple months due to a plover nest that sits within 1000 meters of the point. (mandated buffer zone) Information on that can be found here;

Yeah... I've known of this for a bit more. Pretty sad. You'd think gas prices are discouraging for buying off-road vehicles. Now they're getting rid of the reason they were meant for. I live in Virgina Beach, and we would go down there for day trips. Surfing, fishing, and driving around on the beach. Great times. Can't believe they're really doing that.

Parts of a local beach (Duxbury Beach) get closed as well when plovers nest. Last summer I saw a jeep with a "Plovers Taste Like Chicken" bumper sticker that I thought was hilarious.

Here's one...

One of the restaurants in Buxton, NC had a sign out front with the day's special... "Fried Plover Basket."
