Hub. Your bearing is shot.

If you bought it from a dealership go right back there, I don't recommend driving it either, complete failure of that bearing is not a pleasant thing.

The noise itself sounds like the caliper bracket contacting the rotor, so you may want to check the inner face to see if it has been damaged.

To confirm, jack up that corner so the tire is off the ground, place hands at 12 and 6 and see if you can move the wheel, there should be no play at all, past normal flex of the tire itself.

Jesus. I bought it private party. I had it inspected on Friday from an Import specialist and said everything was great on te car, except that the tie rods had the smallest amount of pay.

What am I looking at to get this repaired at an independent mechanic? I am very worried.

The part from the dealership is around $300, sure you can find one cheaper online, but may take more time. Make sure what ever you get includes a new axle nut, or you also get one. As I said, the rotor needs to be checked for any damage as well.

Book time for replacement is 1.3 hours of labor.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. That's definitely what it was. I took it to my local shop. Got a quote of $600 for parts/labor.

Called the LR dealership in my area and they quoted me at $750.01.

Your indy shop seems high(obviously the dealer does as well) unless that includes a new rotor as well. I wouldn't pay more then 2 hours labor (book time is a guide, not a mandate by any means) and no extra labor for the rotor, as it comes off during the hub replacement, only extra labor involved is opening the box to get the new one out.

That cost was just for the hub assembly. Shop looked at Rotor and said everything was AOK -- I drove it only a mile to the shop after hearing the noise.

Also said that the coolant sensor needs to be replaced -- another $104.

Gotcha.

In your opinion, if I had the car inspected on Wednesday, should they have caught that the Hub Assembly and bearing was shot, or does this just happen at the spur of the moment?
