1. Ground clearance
2. Solid Axles (read greater wheel travel and supposed toughness)
3. Removable top !
4. Short Wheel base
5. Great approach/departure/breakover angle
6. Aftermarket buildability (is that a word?)
7. Simplicity

Also describes RonLR3's next car -- a Rubicon!

Oh but a Rubi also has lockers all the way around and an (electronically) disengagable front sway bar for increased ariculation. OH....not to mention a 70:1 crawl ratio. A Rubi would be pretty much unstoppable. I don't know how beefy the parts are underneath compared to a Defender, but as far as the design/capability goes...it'd be hard to beat.

Guys, I think you are being a bit harsh on Ron. Yes, he is factoring all the wrong principals in his decision, but he is considering (or was) and LR3 for some good reasons: Capablity, Roominess, and Ride. These are all valid and good reasons to choose an LR3.

Ron: I have a Rubicon and an LR3 (and an Armada). The LR3 and Ruby do not compare in any category. If you are physically of ample proportion, as am I, the 2007+ Wrangler will not accommodate you very well. The dash is obtrusively configured to dig into your knees, and the door panel is also very intrusive into your thigh. For this reason, my family choose a 2005 Wrangle Unlimited (stretched 2 door called the LJ platform) because the older style dash fit my 6'-7", 300 lbs frame much better. However, the Jeep is entirely uncivilized in road handling. I drive a fair amount, about 20,000 miles a year, I cannot imagine doing it in the Jeep, but I love every minute of my time in the LR3. Imagine a Volvo V70 with superb ground clearance and that's a good comparison to the LR3 in terms of interior quality, ride and road handling (well, okay, it doesn't corner quite like one).

Nathan, I don't think that we were getting on Ron for considering the LR3. It's the nature of his questions and the inconsistency of his data that did him in.

I'm looking for a true 4x4 SUV, similar to my 2008 Sequoia, which has part time 4x4, full time 4x4, 4 low, and locking rear diff. Its not that great off road, but excellent in snow. While its super big, its cramped for me the driver with harly any head room. I do like the LR3, and at this time not considering the wrangler. I was happy with the LR3 handling, but didn't care for the rubber. Do like the Range Rover, but out of my price range, and hard to find any with low mileage under 5K.
