i agree that the NAV is not the greatest, but i very much enjoy the 4X4 information, the compass, and an already installed touch screen. Plus its all tied in to the rest of the system. That's my justification for the NAV unit. Its really all about the individual, so get whatever fits you. Lots of great info from lots of great people on this forum.

I really like the NAV. Granted, it's my first vehicle with a navigation system, but I don't understand why people are critical of it...I think it works well and has many nice features; especially the off-road stuff. I can honestly say I've used all the features of the LR3 for non-trivial purposes. ...just a few weeks ago the off-road NAV got us out of an OHV area without having to back-track, saving at least an hour. I love the "electronic breadcrumbs" feature, too. I do however wish that it could work in a "hybrid mode" allowing you to plot your points using LAT/LONG points and then use roads that are in the system such as logging roads and non-classified roads.

That said, here are "must haves" for me:

1. NAV
2. Adaptive Xenon Headlamps
3. HD package

Any other options I could take or leave. I've already expounded on why I like the NAV. The lights...well I'm just sort of a lighting-guy I really love the HIDs and the way they peek around corners at night. The HD package is easy enough to justify, no explanation needed, but to each their own. For me, the locking rear diff is WAY more important than a 3rd row seat!

With used, you lose any hope of a warranty. For me the only V6 option would have been a diesel.

The warranties are transferable, so I'm not sure what that statement means.

I bought a used '05 earlier this year and have had a great experience. There were a couple of minor things found when I took it in to the dealer to add a towing wiring harness. They found the problems and fixed them under warranty no problem.

For mileage (mine is a V8), I get around 16 mpg for all around driving, which is about a 50/50 mix of city/highway. Like others I do take efforts to drive economically (no fast starts, coast to stops, no rapid accelleration, etc).

broiler,
my meaning was if you were out of factory. my buddy bought a freelander out of warranty and had to go with 3rd party. LR did not offer anything else. My meaning was generally speaking of a "new car" warranty.

Angell, I bought mine through Diplomatic sales after a year in Afghanistan and I agree with Tech on many points.
As for "fair" prices, these vehicles don't come with a CPO warranty like BMW, so check Autotrader.com and Ebay for fair prices nationwide.
As far as year, you will be safe with any 2007 (most bugs were solved) and you can save a big depreciation chunk there.
As far as model, don't muck around unless you are on a strict financial budget, get the V8 HSE. You will get Nav, electric seats, bluethooth, Logic 7 stereo and all the other needed goodies. Being as you are from Ohio, you might look for one with a cold weather pack.
I took mine to Germany last winter with the crappy stock Goodyears and this thing goes through light snow (2-8 inches) like a madman.
I get about 14 MPG around town with a pretty heavy foot and 21-22 MPG on the autopista (Spanish highway) doing 72-75MPH (the limit). Highway mileage drops to about 18 at 85MPH:hmmmm:

Good luck

Oh....PS. Gas here is about $8.25 a gallon and I still wouldn't trade this truck for anything!

Hey guys, I finally bit the bullet last week and bought a 2008 LR3 loaner with 300 miles on it. It's an SE V8 in Java Black. Got a pretty nice deal. No nav, but it has the cold weather package, xenon headlights, full warranty, and some other extras. I also had them install the driving lamp kit, the A-frame brush bar, and tail light protectors. Absolutely loving it. It's averaging no less than 17.5 MPG in my area (highways and country roads).
