Hey guys, new here. Currently in 335xi. My question is.. Should I stay away from this vehicle? I drive about 20k miles a year. So i'll run out of my warranty in little over 2 years. Has there been any major reliability problems that people have heard or experienced and as far is I've seen. It's just been minor electrical problems. Thanks!!

Hello and welcome!

I don't think there is enough time passed to know the answer to your questions yet. A couple of us very active memebers on the forum have only had our LR4s for a few months. I haven't had any issues with mine other than a small electronic issue that went away as soon as I restarted the truck.

I would encourage you to look through some of the other threads in the LR4 section. There is enough activity that you should be able to gather some good information on the truck.

If you drive that much, I would certianly recomend that you purchase an extended warranty to cover your miles for the time you will have the truck. For about $2k, you can increas yoru mileage limit to 100,000 miles.

Good luck and if you have specific questions about the truck I will try to help.

Thanks rob for the info. The extended warranty is it drivetrain?

And lastly are there any exhaust for these vehicles? Just something to let the v8 breath a bit and can we chip it yet?

I saw on another forum that someone had put a new exhaust on thier LR3. I can't remember the name of the exhaust company, but I'm fairly sure there is a part for the LR3. I would imagine it would also fit the LR4 but I'm not 100% sure on that.

The warranty covered more than drive train, I think it was very comprehensive and covered everything but normal consumables; tires, brake pads, filters...

There have been quite a few discussions in the LR3 section as most of them are coming out of factory warranty and people are looking at thier options.

Have you had a chance to drive the LR4 yet?

Good luck!

Sorry haven't gotten back. The notification didn't..well notify me of a reply hehe. Ikust went to check out the vehicle quick before class. After sitting in the car and checking it out myself. I'm kinda half half of getting one now. It looks a bit cheap..maybe just me I don't know. My dad has '10 sequia and the interior looks very nice compared to the lr4. I didn't have time to test drive one. Going to call the sales person back and prolly shoot for a Saturday of this week. Hopefully the drive will change my mind a bit.

"Cheep", really???? My wife and I stopped and drove a Sequoia prior to getting the LR4. What really turned us off of the Sequoia were the mountains, upon mountains of hard plastic............everywhere! Of all the vehicles we drove, it was by far the least "luxurious". It also drove like an aircraft carrier on wheels. The only vehicle I could compare it to was any of the GM Suburban products. Everything about it (except it's shear size) was not on par with the LR4 (or the Q7, the X5, the GL, either of the Lexus's, the Lincoln, or the Escallade.
What really turned us off was the price, and the fact that we wanted to lease. The salesman insisted he give us a quote for a three year lease, and with nothing down but the minimum, the monthly payments were over a grand a month. The vehicle priced out around $57k (same as the LR4 we were looking at), but the the payments were $100 higher per month. Also, it was announced that Toyota is discontinuing the Sequoia this year due to poor sales in the US. That really didn't inspire any confidence! Sorry, just our observations. I hope you're happy with what you choose!

Hi,

I rather like the interior of the LR4. I dove most of the trucks that LR4MYWIFE drove with the exception of the X5 and the Seqoia, and only the GL seemed to be a little nicer than the LR4. I wasn't that excited about the GM products, but for more reasons than the interior.

The Lexus products were kind of dissapointing. We have been treated like roalty at the dealership for the last 3 years. We purchaed my wife a new Lexus from them and our service has been out of this world. The LX was just too damn much money. I really thought we would walk away from the dealership with a new GX460, but after sitting in it and driving it I was really not that excited. The interior on that truck was really a turn off. I don't like the center stack and all the little buttons along with the finish of the metal in that area.

I would have loved to buy a GL550 and really had my heart set on it. But like the LX570, it was just too much money for me to spend on a truck that sits in the garage most of the time. The other GLs would have done just as well as the GL550, but the 550 looks really awesome with the flares and different front end. Still, to get into a similar GL320 or 450, I would have had to spend at least $10k more than I did for my LR4.

I'm not sure which one of the color interiors you looked at. I had my heart set on a black interior but ended up with the light one. I actually think the light color interior is dressier than the all black one I sat in. (no offence to anyone who got the black)

I would be curious to see what you think after driving it.

Rob,
Yep, that's pretty muck the same scenario we ran into. My wife's first choice in vehicles was the GL 450. We both pretty much loved the vehicle and how it drove. The problem was basically two fold. First, we could not track down a 450 in the colors or the equipment level we wanted without getting the beast into the $75 to $80k range. The second issue was the leasing structure of the MB. The cost would have been well over $1200 with the minimum down. Our second favorite vehicle was the LR4, and Oddly enough, we liked it for most of the opposite reasons we liked the GL 450. In the end, our decision went something like this:

"Which one do you like the best", (me now), "I prefer the LR4 for it's ruggedness, and the fact that it's the lowest priced of the ones we drove". (my wife), "yep, I like the GL the best, but the price makes it not worth it to me", "Lets go get the LR4"!

The rest is history. I'm glad we made the decision we made, but now it's not because of the lower price, it's because I down right love the vehicle! Getting out of a more expensive BMW, and now into the LR4, I feel we got a bargain. The LR4 just feels all around better, more expensive, and more rugged then the BMW which was significantly more expensive then the LR4 when equipped the same way. Personally, I feel the LR4 is a bargain in it's market segment. We know have 3500 + miles on it, and no problems (defects) to speak of. Just the quibbles about the NAV and some of the UI. Nothing we can't live with!

Cheers,

Joe

Hey Joe,

Same here, I think it is a bargin in the Lux SUV segment. I'm not sure why more people won't look at it other than the quality issues that previous models have had.

One thing I wasn't prepared for was how nice the LR4 drives. It is amazingly quiet and comfortable. I expected the GL and GX as well as some of the others to ride and drive nice, but the LR4 was a real surprise.

The room for people and luggage is exceptional for the dimensions of the truck and I think the fit and finish are on par with the German marques. Add in the off-road aspects, and I don't think there is a better compromise in a people hauler/off-roader.

In all honesty, we found something to like about just about every vehicle we drove. One of the vehicles I didn't mention was the new Infiniti QX56. I really liked that one, but my wife didn't. She thought the style was funky, but I thought it was unique and cool! Price wise, it too didn't lease out to well being a "newly released vehicle", but in the end, I think we made the right choice. As an all around people mover, bad weather, go anywhere, looks great SUV, you are hard pressed to find a better solution the the LR4. Who knows? Perhaps after three years of lease, I won't be quite a fond of it, but I think I will be. Some friends of ours have a 2007 RRS that is coming off lease, and they are about in tears over having to get out of it and into something else other then another LR product. They have had virtually no issues with their RRS in almost 60K miles, so they have no problems about getting another one, but they are hesitant to buy out their lease as they are concerned about what maintenance, and or repair bills may be down the road. They would not buy it and only keep it a year or two. They are thinking about getting another RRS if the deal is right. The one comment they keep making is how well their 3 year old RRS still drives. Essentially, they claim it drives every bit as nice and solid as it did day one.

cheers,

Joe
