I don't know much about transmissions, but since you heard a clank it doesn't sound good. It may be the clutch pack or the 2nd gear band broke, either way the tranny will have so come out and see what parts are broken.

Good luck!

it kinda works now

2 days ago i decided to take a drive to see if the problem went away. when i put it in drive it doesnt move but when i go into 1st gear it goes and then i can put it in drive as long as i am moving and it works fine. when i come to a complete stop i have to put it back in 1st gear. when driving though i can put it into drive adnn it shifts when it is supposed to. i dont know what is wrong? can anybody help me. i also went to the mechanic and he said i need to rebuild the tranny or get a new/use done for around $2600.00, he also said i need a new transfer case. is there anything i can do besides get a new tranny? thanks for your help

If it was me I would 1) Read the codes and 2) drop the pan and look for debris. Phoenix Transmissions in Arizona supposedly has the best price on rebuilt transmissions. I have been looking for a source for a rebuild kit in anticipation of this problem but have not found one yet. If you find metal shavings/filings/wire in your pan the whole system is contaminated, and you will need to flush lines, etc. I would say that the more you drive it the more damage you are doing. Don't ruin the core value of your transmission.
