Hi there,
Just purchased a 96 Discovery Diesel and have a few questions - sorry if these have been answered before.

1) The plastic casing around the auto gear lever gets very warm during driving, is this normal?
2) How do I know if the engine is a 300TDi or a 200TDi?
3) There is a broken 'hole' above the ash tray - what is it meant to be?
4) the switches around the instrument binnacle do not light up at night - I found each one has a small green LED in it - is there a common fuse or have they just all failed over a period of time?

And finally, does anyone know where I can get an owners handbook (not a maintenance manual but the one that comes with the car when new) downloaded over the internet or purchased for a lowish price?

Many thanks,

Mike

Concrats on the purchase. My gear lever gets hot only when the heat is on. Any other time its fine. Thought I seen a post about this and people said it can be the brake drum heating up? Dont really know though. Rover-Renovations.com has FREE rave cd/disk. Takes awhile cause they are always on back order. Dont know how to post a link, maybe someone else can. Also try discoweb.org for other info and treads. Go out and enjoy the truck...

1) Normal... it is the heat from the Transmission
2) Not sure on this one... since I haven't seen either one.
3) This should be the coin Tray
4) sounds like you have a bad headlight switch.. you may want to check your rear parking lights at night as well, I bet they are not on either.

The plastic casing around the auto shifter will warm up, it should be backlit by two 5W capless bulbs which need to lose their heat somewhere. There is also going to be some heat transferred from the transmission as it warms up. The shift stick will be hot as well.

I have the same problem with switchgear backlighting. havent sourced any replacement bulbs yet, but having tried to remove one was enough to try the patience of the most saintly of saints! Check the bulbs with an avometer or something similar.
