I couldn't find it on search so I'll ask here.

I just took the LR3 in for the 7500 service. When I asked if I could upgrade the oil to Mobil 1 from dino Castrol 5w30 the main service writer said they don't recommend Syns in the the Jag engines as it makes it leak prone but they do recommend 3K oil changes. ***? I've never had any trouble with syns and all oil analysis points to superior heat performance with the syns.

I think I am going to throw the BS flag but the service writer has been doing it for 20 years.

Does anybody have any direct feedback on Mobil 1 in the LR3.

Had my dealer put in Mobil 1 full synthetic at ~2000 miles. They made no such claims.

The reality is any 5w30 oil will work fine. If you want to use synthetic, go for it. There is no way any type of oil will make an engine "leak prone."

Well, unless you are talking about an old engine that isn't leaking because it's being sealed by sludge: switching to synthetic there will be an issue.

Anyway... If he's been working on Land Rovers for 20 years, he's probably very experienced with leaks and the scenario I mentioned.

I think you said that a bit tongue in cheek but you may be spot on. If he's been working on Rovers from back in the day you couldn't blame him for being a bit gun shy.

I started a thread on this very subject a few months ago and it generated a lot of good discussion. You can view it here: http://www.landroverworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4381

FYI, I know there are dealerships out there that have taken it upon themselves to use synthetic oils and you don't even have to ask. One of them is Intermountain Land Rover in Salt Lake City, UT.

Thanks for the link. Bad pilot work on my part for not finding it in search.

The guy just got my attention with the 20 years experience. The thread confirmed my experience and research I did for my other cars.

Castrol out and Mobil 1 in.
