My brake pads are about done (2mm on the fronts, 3mm on the back). Last time I had the rotors changed also.

What is the call on this vehicle, change the rotors every time or every other? Apparently turning these rotors is problematic.

Mechanic says it is roughly $600 to do all for wheels w/o changing the rotors. I'll get break squeak for a long time due to the ridges in my rotors.

It is roughly a $1200 job if I do the rotors and pads.

Any advice?

Thanks!! I do trust my mechanic...now that I found a non-dealer shop that works exclusively on rovers and loves the vehicles. Doesn't seem to try to sell me things I don't need, just gives me the options.

If the rotors are not under sized then leave then and install a set of ceramic Akebono pads, no dust, don't squeak, stop better and last longer. Make sure to flush the brake system when done.

After 50k I just replaced my pads only. Didn't pull the rotors as there was not scoring. Used ecb green. Works great. No squeaks and smooth but great braking. Also flushed the fluid. 115$ for the DIYer

Pulling the rear rotor requires recalibration of the Emergency brake. Google disco3 uk brake bible for the best info.

I had my front brakes done around 50k miles as well and used the Akebono brake pads. I had to have the rotors replaced as well as they got scored - get this - from asphalt chunks on a road repair job in my local town roads! You would think that a vehicle designed to go off road wouldn't have to worry about this but I know when it happened, the chunks of asphalt sprayed up under the car and somehow some pieces got jammed against the rotor and scored it badly.
Anyway, wouldn't hurt to do while you have it pulled apart. Depends on how much work they might need.

Mine has been consistant since it was new. New pads and rotors every other break job. I have been getting about 30k miles out of each front pad set and about 40k miles on the back.

Good to know. So I'm guessing it is not an annoying squeak or anything in between. Thanks.

I'll probably just do pads this time and will decide if I want to try those ceramic pads instead.

What are the trade-offs between the no-dust ceramics and whatever the car traditionally has on it?

I listed the in a past reply, no dust, no squeak, stops better and lasts longer. Just don't go out and buy a cheap set of ceramics, get the Akebono. If you can't find the part numbers, contact customer service and they will get the numbers for you.

I'm going to be buying my crappy $69 rear pads soon and putting them on in 1/2 hour. And by 'crappy', I mean perfectly adequate. The last set lasted about 45,000
