Range Rover transmission problem ??

i have an 04 R R and have started having issues with the rpms getting stuck between 3 & 4 when i'm driving around 30 mph and it doesn't get back right until i take it to 45 and then it will switch out and when i slow down it does a **** going from 3rd gear to 2nd. the closest land rover dealership is about an hour and half away and no one here local seems to want to work on it either they dont know how or are afraid to. any ideas what the problem maybe. the other day the problem last for about 20 mins and the transmission overheated message came on. :-(
