Removing wood door trim

Does anyone know if the whole door panel needs to be removed to take the wood trim off?

Yes it does. The whole door panel needs to come off to access handle cluster which attaches to the wood trim piece. It's easy after you do it once. A diagram of the door for panel removal can be found in this thread:
