I have a nearly perfect, newly purchased CPO 2006 LR3 HSE with the standard black leather steering wheel (with phone and voice command buttons.) The leather has become damaged and in parts is cracked and ridged. I think it must be from chemicals, lotions or oils on the previous owner's hands. I would like to replace the steering wheel with a new genuine land rover wheel. Has anyone done this? I'm pretty handy and feel like it should not be a real big deal. Thanks for any tips and pointers.

probably be covered under warranty

Sorry that I didn't my research before posting, but I happened to call my local dealer and they said that as long as the vehicle had less than 50K miles, then warranty should cover this. I'm taking it by for them to look at and likely replace the wheel. So if the leather on the steering wheel is breaking down "pre-maturely" on your LR3, check with the dealer...

If the vehicle is under warranty it should be replaced by the dealer for free. You don't have to be all that handy for that !

I've done that...but then again I am myself pretty handy...at getting the dealer to do what I want that is !

Has anybody successfully got the dealer to pay for this problem? Mine says since all the LR3's pretty much exhibit this same problem, that it'll be considered a wear item. I mentioned that I had driven 300,000 miles on 4 Range Rovers that it didn't happen to, but both my LR3s did. Basically, "How can it be faulty if they all do it?" Ridiculous.
I need some firepower for when I go in, so if any of you have a dealer that was a help to you for this situation, please let me know. Thanks.

Could you guys tell me your dealership names so I can name drop a little? Today it went like this, they are not at liberty to replace it because it was a wear issue. I pushed it and he said he'd get the LR rep to come by and I could bring in my car for him to see if it should be covered. It honestly isn't that bad yet, so I'm going to let it fall apart until my warranty is up in January and try again. Still, it sucks to know that I am stuck with a dealer that isn't in any way cooperative or helpful.
And just to give out some bad PR, which they deserve for making me work hard to get them to treat me like an actual customer, it is LR Farmington Hills, MI

Houm, thanks so much for the thread. That so many people have had it replaced with no problems should help me out a lot. I'll definitely be going back with a printout of the thread.
