I used to drive up to Tahoe all the time in those conditions. There were times when I was rocking 4WD that I wish I had chains on the tires. I'm not sure how bad it was when you were driving the other day, but don't laugh at me if i put chains on mine.

I've been in a ditch (with a 4WD) in a snowstorm before. I've also been stuck on an Appalachian mountain when the road turned to an ice rink and I had to wait for a salt truck because I didn't have chains. Neither was fun. ;-)

If you do not want an all-season, but a great all-around tire you can also consider the Pirelli ATR. It is better on the road than the OE Michelins that it replaced (ride, noise, dry/wet grip and hydroplanning), and obviously offroad. Very composed for an AT tire;albeit, not a very aggressive AT. Compared to the 20" Zeons that I have on my RRS, the ATRs are much quieter >50mph, have better dry/wet grip and hydroplanning resistance, but are nowhere close to the Zeon for most offroad situations. The Zeons are the best AT offroad that I have experienced (Revos, Yoko AT-S, ATRs). The ATRs are also HR speed rated. I have not driven either in the snow, but Tirerack describes the ATR for "winter driving". However, folks do note that they quickly lose traction at reallly low temperatures. If you want an all-season that does great in the snow - as stated, go with the Nokians

The one area that I think the ATR might be better offroad than the Zeons is on dry grass/gravel, where the tread really seems to grip well. Such as conditions in my pic below - very little tire slip.

I certainly have been in snow conditions that have warranted chains. The day I saw the RRS with chains was not one of them...it was sad.

That being said, not sure I have ever been on hwy 80 to Tahoe when the road was open and an lr4 would need chains, but your mileage may vary...
