Those that know, (that means you, Joey!)

I have a '97 Disco 4.0 in need of a new serpentine belt. After being quoted $250 with labor, I think I will give it a shot myself. I did a search function on this forum, and found plenty of replies say that it is easy, but I wondered if this "play by play" instructions I found for a D2 would be the same as my D1 (minus the ACE system).

Any help would be appreciated!!

Changing the S-belt is acually very easy... 30 minutes tops for someone who has never done it... Just make sure you print the diagram.... 10 minutes or less for someone who has done it before.

Most Auto Parts stores carry the belt in stock for less than $40.

Please go to advance auto $27 for one. Took 15 mins. Rent their tool. It was $30 to buy use it and bring it back. Not a problem. Keep the old one for a spare or just buy another one.

Just curios what tool you needed to rent or buy. all you need is a breaker bar with a 15mm socket IIRC...

Yeah Joey its a long flat metal thing with a hole at the end where the socket go. Its a whole kit with different sizes for different cars. Advance auto let you rent it for the price of the idem. Wants you bring it back you get you money back. Never knew they had such a thing til my buddy told me. I was having problems getting my socket on the bolt when I did mine.

hmmm interesting... I knew about the tool for the fan nut, but didn't know they made one for the s-belt tensioner... I guess I learn something new everyday.

This would be a good time to check the belt tensioner idler bearing.
A Napa Auto Part item, SKF brand for around $ 8 USD. SKF # 6203-2ZJ.
That idler turns over 3 x faster than the crank plus the load and 100K miles is
asking a lot from it. Better to replace it now, takes 10 minutes better than dead on the road
far from home, trust me this happened to me. Replaced bearing in a parking lot, got lucky.
A 2' long piece of pipe that will slip over a box wrench is all that's needed to rotate the tensioner for a belt replacement.
