hello all...new to this site. i just bought a 2000 disco II with all options excluding the ace. the wife drives a 93 landcruiser and i say....these two monster each have their own different personalities which i like both.

anyway...i noticed that it when cold...the tranny takes a while to hit 4th gear (?) on the highway. i would say about 5-6 miles before it would shift to the final gear. any idea on why it's doing this and what remedy to fix?

last...also on the highway...there is this loud droaning noise...kinda like "rou rou rou". the faster you go the faster the noise. i know it's not the tires cause you could definately hear the the difference in this noise compared to the tire noise as the tires would make a different sound over different road pavement . is this the drive shaft?

so for the long post. thank you for your inputs.

Groaning noise cold be the front drive shaft (they do not have greasable UV joints), they tend to go bad and take out the transmission. Have it checked and replace as needed.

Transmission you need to check the transmission fluid level, the D2 does not have a transmission dip stick, you have to check via the fill hole... not fun. I will try to find the pic so you can see where it is.

Also never hurts to add some lucas transmission fix (good stuff).

I have a 04, and it doesn't allow the torque-lockup until the engine temp is normal, which makes it seem like it's in third.

thanks for your inputs. owenbirch...that does make sense. i probably won't worry about that too much then. i'll just check the fluid level and then top it off with some lucas.

re: the front drive shaft...seems from reading different posts about the shaft...it's a weak point of of the disco. i figure i will get that replace for insurance. wouldn't want to be stranded a few hundred miles from home with a broken shaft and possible busted tranny.
