I think the subs are 4". Not sure why they would make a 4" sub, but I have a 6.5" Rockford Punch lying around. It looks bigger than the subs in my D2.

The rear door speakers. They're attached in the middle to the amplifier. No place I've talked to could fit something in there without doing some custom work.

i just took the barn door speakers off for replacement, while they are attached via clips, there are also screwholes in the mounting that allow you to use regular old replacements

I guess I've jumped in here a little late, however, if you you want Bass, you need to fit a sub, or a couple of subs, preferably in the rear. If you decide to go ahead, the speakers in the rear door, have to be disconnected and you cannot fit decent subs into the space, you will just have to leave them there.
Finding a place to fit a couple of subs is not easy and which ever way you go, you will lose some space. In my 95, I removed the rear flipdown seats and fitted a custom subwoofer enclosure.

that sucks, i pulled the cover off of the barn door speakers today and their wasn't anyhting left around the cone. you think installing speakers is a pain, try installing an aftermarket deck. i just finished installing mine today.

The subs are 6.5" & the rest are 4" in the D1.
If you install an aftermarket deck then you will have trouble hooking up the rear "subs".
Best bet is to run an amp to the cargo space & wire your speakers into that
