I've been trying to test further (I've not yet removed any trim panels to get at the amp in my 2012). I've tried isolating each speaker set in playing the same song I typically use to test speakers / headphones (Bohemian Rhapsody). All speaker sets sound identical to me and arguably "improve" if I really crank the volume so this leads me to believe it is indeed something with the amplifier (or possibly fuses / wiring? Not sure on that).

I've now tested the same track via Bluetooth over my iPhone, line-in with USB over my iPhone, line-in with the AUX port on my iPhone and via CD. Bluetooth sounds the weakest, CD sounds the best with USB and AUX tied for second. They all are lacking mid-range and bass though.

I'll look into removing the trim panel to get at the amp and see if I can inspect the wiring there. I just am not totally knowledgable on this so I don't want to make matters worse ;)

Appreciate all the tips though!

Hello! This is an old thread, but I wanted to ask: did you find a solution to the problem? The sound in my 2012 LR4 HSE is terrible—just like the one you described...
