I had the same issue. I thought maybe it was my fault for having something caustic on my hand at some point. Then I saw this post...thanks. Had the truck in for service today, they were out of stock on steering wheels, but ordered one and will replace it for free in two weeks. I have 49,350 miles on the truck.

Good post. JUST noticed this on mine as well. 45K ...so JUST in time!

I should note, that I do clean and treat the leather. It didn't make a difference for me.

my peeling was on the left hand side; and they are ordering me a free one. did others have peeling in the same spot? i am trying to avoid a non-free one at 90k.

The new wheel has a tougher skin, not as squishy either. It really was a defect. I don't think you'll have to do it again. $99 bucks on eBay for a new one.

its on the entire top curve of my wheel, mostly in the back....sticky and starting to come off in small pieces. i'm hoping it is enough for them to notice/warranty.

Sucks that this didn't really start happening on mine until after 50k miles. Must be time or sun related....

you should see what they'll do for you at the dealer. the new steering wheel rim (they only replace the outer ring) they put on my LR3 is totally different from the original. it is not shiny at all; it is more like an old-school, leather, indoor-use-only basketball. there was clearly a bad design flaw in the original. i kinda like it. the only negative is that there is now a strong surface finish contrast between the new steering wheel rim and the airbag cover.

mine is getting replaced, which is nice. but, they said it is backordered so i'll have to wait for it.

also getting the hood lettering mentioned in another post handled. i have definitely been happy with the LR warranty for my first 45K miles. most things taken care of w/o questions.

I'm also having the same issue with the leather deteriorating on the steering wheel. 2005 LR3 with about 36K miles. Local dealer said they will replace it, and that they have seen a few others with this issue.
