Did a little bit of searching on the Ford V6 in the LR3. Given the German manufacture and its 60 degree layout it is likely the Cologne V6. The thing that confuses me is that the LR propaganda on the US site states that the motor is ALL aluminum. I tend to doubt this as I can find no mention of any versions of this motor with an aluminum block.

Although it likely has a different cam and pistons (higher CR) the motor is likely very close to the Ford SOHC 640. You can see some HP/Torque curves as well as fuel consumption/RPM at this URL:

I find the power coupled with the 6 speed auto perfectly adequate. No complaints.

fuel economy? vs V8

Hello,

What kind of fuel economy can the V6 boast?

The motor came as a bit of a shock to me. I saw it in an official Land Rover advertisment in USA Today.. I never even saw it coming. I figured it was derived from the freelander's engine.. all the same though, I really wish they would begin importing the TDV6 or any diesel for that matter.

Have been in a v6 for a couple of weeks. Getting around 14-16mpg depending on when and what type of driving we just finished. When the adaptive transmission is behaving normally instead of some sort of economy mode, the power delivery is better than a v6 Cayenne we test drove.

V6 is not new; it's been out for months. EPA estimate is 15/18 vs. 14/18 on V8. In others words, the same mileage. But based on experience with other vehicles, the V6 may do slightly worse in reality due to the massive weight of the LR3... especially with additional load/cargo. It's gotta fight pretty hard.

I also had the bright idea to check the LR Australia site since the engine is available there as well. The block has magically become cast iron and compression ratio has dropped to 9.7:1 and not the 9.75:1 on the US site. Given that 9.7:1 is the global specification I'd be the LR simply has a different cam profile and more aggressive ignition advance given the premium fuel requirement.

This is actually good news because the lower compression increases the likelihood of it burning regular instead of premium. (The V8 has a significantly higher CR.) The knock sensor should simply ****** the timing. After I get it broken in I'll see how it runs on regular and what it does to the mileage. If the mileage decreases it won't offset the fuel cost savings.

BTW I've only got about 600 miles on the truck - mileage is running 13-14 mpg with lots of stop and go and idle while I sit in the air conditioned truck figuring out all the features.

Have the stripped down version of the V6. Runs great, climbs hills fine. Got 18 mpg on a trip covering CA, OR and WA. Get 14.6 mpg putting around Big Bear Lake, CA.

The stripped down version gives lots of storage space in the back side wells and by the brake area in the engine compartment. Have collapsable shovel and hand axe stored in the engine compartment, and aircompressor, tool roll, first aid kit, emergancy triangle, etc. stored in the back wells. Also a Garmin StreetFinder GPS just fits on the dash where the Nav station is located.

Means I can casually off road when ever I want w/o having to load up.
