The Good the Bad and The Name??

Alright, maybe im just new to the whole Rover bug but i have a couple things i dont understand. I know when you think of offroading, treking in the mountains, and safari's the first truck in most poeples head would be a land rover or the old body land cruisers. If this isthe case then landrover has made a name for its self with not just its luxury (which i assume is only in the recent years) but in its performance. So how in the middle of the safari or the middle of a trail could a discovery or rover of somesort break down and be repaired. People say rovers are unreliable and what not, but i mean they made their name for them selves some how? Are people just jealous? Do they envy the luxury of the current rovers along with their off roading ability? Or is land rover just running on the hype of its name from the past decades, and will soon just be considered a yuppie car that need to be fixed or repaired daily (FORD )....

just letting some ideas out i dunno...

First, not sure where you got all the info. Land rovers for years have had weird issues. But it is a family member that will not normaly let you down.

They are also the most field repairable civilian vehicle on the market untill the D2 came out that is.

With the Range Rover and the Discovery models, Land Rover got into the more Luxury market. The both are very capable off road, and more comfortable on road, then most of other companies on the road.

Yes the do break down, but they can be fixed just about anywhere. Most people just don't take the time to learn how to fix them. Also as far as performance goes, the Land Rovers, until recent models, have not been know for High perfromance, but more able to go anywhere abilities. Most LR's have started out as yuppie vehicles, then are bought by people who love LR's and understand that they do require a little TLC and not be neglected.

Hope this helps, and yes I love my Disco and would not get rid of it for anything, even though I know once in a while I have had some weird issues come up.

I agree with Joey. All vehicles will break down at some stage, some brands more than others. You should visit some other forums J**p, toy yoda (tongue in cheek) etc to
understand that they have mechanical issues. Have said that, it's interesting to note that Land Rover vehicles serve in more of the worlds armed forces than any other brand. It's not because of their luxurious interior fittings.

I would also like to point out a couple of other things that were touched on, but not really expounded upon....

I have a '97 Disco I. I have owned several luxury vehicles, new and used, and I consider the appointments in the Disco to be quite to my liking.

Yes, she is a yuppie vehicle, in the eyes of people who know no better.
IMHO, there is no more capable vehicle on the planet. Sure, there are hummers, and jacked up j(ch)eeps, and whatever else. I would take my 'Rover against any one, on any terrain, any day. It's just that simple.

Now, as far as the mechanics go, here is where 'Rover blows away any other vehicle on the planet. As was stated before, all vehicles have mechanical issues, regardless of who made them. When you make a vehicle that is designed to run as long as these are, and as hard as these are, you are bound to run into some snags here and there. However, I challenge ANYONE to attempt to fix anything on a 'Rover, and that pretty facade becomes real utilitarian. real quick. I have never ever seen a vehicle more condusive to being broken in the middle of nowhere than my 'Rover. Any thing you need to do to it can be removed/changed/disassembled in 10 minutes, barring major repair (I mean the kinda you aren't fixing on the road, like a dropped tranny).

Bar none, there is no finer vehicle on the road, and I will own one until the day I die.

I have taken - and repaired on the trail - my D1 over more difficult obstacles than my previous offroad vehicles that were not Rovers. To top that, my Rover is stock with the exception of an OME 2" lift and MT's. No lockers, nada. I have beaten her to within an inch of her life - or so I thought - and she still keeps going. I am constantly surprised at her capabilities. Anything that has gone wrong on her is stuff I could have and should have fixed had I been paying closer attention - like the damn battery cables going bad from corrosion and ending up with a dead battery on the trail - thanks to Roland, I was up and going in no time. Like Joey says, some attention and TLC, Rovers are incredibly capable vehicles. In my opinion, other than bizarre occurrances, most things can be fixed or prepared for prior to going on the trail or a long distance trip.
