The manual talks about a harness that connects behind the tail lights. The dealer wants $200+ for this. Is it anything special(circuit board/relays/trailer brake modulator?), or is it just the connector and wires?

Discoweb.org. Go to tech. Scroll down to trailer wiring Disco2. You can use a $20 part from walmart :)

I recommend not using the $20 part from walmart, but it will work.

I would get (this is what I got) a Trailer wiring kit that required a seperate 12v power supply (there is one going to the back already and it is fused). This way if you have a short in the trailer your not going to have to rewire the entire rover, just change the fuse.

Good idea joey. Got a part number or anything? I would prefer to change a fuse as opposed to hunting down a short somehwerre else in the truck.

just wired my 97 disco got the part from Uhaul, $16.95, with great connectors that you don't have to splice. Uhaul guy gave me the run down. LR dealer wanted $180 and couldn't even tell me if it was the correct part. Took me 20 minutes to do and it works great.

Rover Wire - UHAUL part # 13486 wires
GREEN/WHITE(RT TURN) GREEN
GREEN/RED(LEFT TURN) YELLOW
RED/ORANGE(TAIL) BROWN
GREEN/PURPLE(BRAKE) RED
BLACK(GROUND) WHITE

open panel behind pass. side tail light in harness is 5 or 7 pin connector with rubber cap. The Uhaul 13486 wiring kit comes with self splicing connectors beautiful and easy to use. Saved $300 or more by doing it myself, and I am not very handy.

I bought the part from autozone in the listing (PN 46155). It has a fuse and uses the power from the prewired adapter. You just have to cut off the connector and splice the 5 wires together. If you had a really generic one you could always add an inline fuse. I'm thinking of doing that anyway as an extra precaution. it took me about 30 mins to hook everything up. That includes taking the light off...soldering the connections etc etc...

Uhaul part you don't need to cut off the factory connector, it stays intact and you splice trailer wires in behind factory connector.
