Hi. Just taken my 2 year old Discovery 4 in for its 2nd service. The LR dealer advised me that I needed new rear pads and discs because one brake pad had worn down to the metal and knackered the disc. Couple of questions:

1. The brake pad wear sensors did not indicate the pads were getting worn. The dealer says this is because there is only 1 sensor on the 4 rear pads. Is it normal for cars to only have a sensor on one pad?

2. Why would the pad have worn so unevenly? The dealer can't offer an explanation, he says the caliper wasn't sticking, so can't explain it. The other 3 pads all have pretty well identical wear with approx 2-3 mm of brake pad left.

So I've been stuck with a bill for nearly £300 and a dealer who isn't interested. LR apparently also aren't interested and refused to do the work under warranty - even though the sensor system clearly didn't work and they can't off up any explanation for the uneven pad wear. Any thoughts?

Brake wear is never covered under warranty.
Is this an LR3, if so you posted in the wrong section.
Second, never take your truck to a dealer for maintance work, they do a poor job, usually and always charge nearly double the cost over a small local shop.
If you had done the brakes yourself you would have just under $200 American in the job along with changing the brake fluid, which I bet your dealer didn't even do.
As for the cause of the wear, 2 things will cause that, a sticking caliper and or pad sliders were not lubed properly.

Hi Mike

The car is a 2 year old Discovery 4. I take it to the main dealer because it's still under warranty. My beef is the discs were damaged because one of the 4 pads had worn down to the metal, the other 3 being ok but the wear sensor was on one of the other pads. How could I possibly know there was a problem with the pads wearing unevenly?

I religiously follow the LR service schedule & have it done by LR in the hope there won't be any argument should there being an issue. A sticking caliper or unlubed pad slider can't be put down to anything I've done or failed do it i.e. by not following the service schedule.

Cheers for your reply.
