Hi , my first post after introduction and im looking for some help on locating the VSS vehicle speed sensor wire to hook up to my new clarion nax9500e SATNAV unit.

I have searched in vain for the wire and its location, i have the haynes manual but that only shows the sensor itself near the gearbox.

What i want is the actual wire under the dash near the fusebox , dont know the colour or plug but desperately need it for this blessed satnav.

Any help out there would be appreciated.

As far as I can find in the repair manual, the Speedometer is electronic... I would remove the dash cover over the Gages (two screws, becarful it will break easily), then find the wire going to the speedometer.

Let me know if you need something else, I may be able to remove mine and get a picture if needed.

Hi Thanks Joey, i am quite certain the wire is in a 20pin plug under the steering wheel, but unsure which one ie pin5 green and pink wire.

I have done a lot of research before posting my question but as far as i know i dont need to touch the speedo surround.

I appreciate your help on answer but its to id the pin and locate the connector under the steering wheel, my fault should of explained better.

Thanks again

As crappy as the VSS (and electrical system in general) is on Disco 1s, I'm not sure I'd try to tie anything into that part. Why not run an antenna and get the vehicle speed from the satellite?

Guess I'm not sure why you're trying something complicated when a simple solution is available...Ockham's Razor and all that....

Hi unfortunateley the new clarion nax9500e requires a gps aerial and a speed sensor for accuracy. Not like my handheld all in 1 navman which does everything.

The new system has a gyroscope built in and also requires speed sensor too as well as a gps aerial.

Thanks for the obvious answer which is not suprising as that was my thought before reading the installation manual and unbundling all the wiring.

Thanks anyway Moose but not what im looking for.

Regards

Pete

the biggest thing is going to decipher which wire it is, there are several places you can hook into it from..

at the ECU, or in the case of the 300ZXTT there was a specific Cruise Control ECU. I found this was the easiest place to work on, as you can unplug the CC ECU and then use your volt meter to find the correct pin by testing each pin. (Unless there is an CC ECU pin layout)

its pretty easy to know when you've found the right wire, take your volt meter and hook it upto the wire (black on ground and red on the wire). Now drive around the block.. The voltage should cycle up and down as you drive, and when you stop it shouldn't cycle..
