Just recently I've noticed that when my '04 disco is decelerating, foot off the gas, I hear this clicking noise, almost like a faint jackhammer sound. When I give it gas, the sound goes away. No noise at idle or start up, just when driving. This could have been happening for a while since my wife drives the disco. Any ideas??

U-Joints in the driveshaft.... they are not greasable and tend to fail on the D2.

How many miles on your truck?
If as Joey mentioned, your front u-joints are failing from lack of grease, then you stop driving it today until you remove the front shaft, lock your t/case so you can drive on the rear shaft only and either get the old shaft rebuilt with 2 new greaseable u-joints and a centering ball or a new shaft from Tom Woods.

Just turned 66,700 miles. Got under it today and noticed the lower weld on the driver side heat shield on the catalytic converter was broken. Could that be the cause of the noise I am experiencing. If not, how much of a pain is it to replace those u-joints. I replaced some on an old dodge years ago, but is there anything special with these, or would I be better off taking it in. Thanks fellas!

Heat shield could cause the issue, but with that many miles, for the money I would replace the U-Joints anyways...

Same as what you did on you old Dodge... easier if you have a press though.

Yes, that could cause it but back to the front drive shaft, if it hasn't been rebuilt or replaced, do it also, when it fails, and most do, it can take your tranny out also.

Joey, Mike or anyone,
Removed the front driveshaft, locked the diff, and took it for a spin. Much to my displeasure, the clicking noises persist. While removing the driveshaft, I noticed some play in the output for the front driveshaft. (The part that the driveshaft mounts to out of the transfer case) Should there be any play while turning that. Or could it be the rear driveshaft? At this point, I just want it to go away so I can hopefully sell this thing!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kevin

Shouldn't be any play that I remember. Easy way to find if it is the rear... put the front back and and take out the back...

Where are you located? might be someone close that can look at.

Replaced the front and took out the rear. Problem persists. At a loss. Could it be the transfer case itself or perhaps the transmission? Live in Annapolis, MD. Called Land Rover of Annapolis and they said it could be a variety of things and recommended bringing it in. OUCH!!
