Alan,
I am in Toronto and bought my 2010 LR4 HSE 12 months ago, 105k km when I bought it and engine had been replaced under warranty by LR.
At the time I chatted it over with my mechanic (who had also owned a 2010 from new). His advice was 2010 or 2011 was the sweetspot as after that the electronics got overly complicated = $$$ to repair. He also said budget a minimum of $1k every time you take it in for repair.
I am pretty happy with mine, although, as I knew, the gas mileage is atrocious. If you are driving it 10-15 mins to work it will have barely warmed up. Not great for any vehicle, especially in winter.
I would go for the lowest mileage / most dealer service records example that you can find thats in your budget (obvious advice). Over 12 months of ownership / 10k km I have replaced the battery and all four brake rotors and pads. Lower controls arms are a regular replacement item = $$. Would look for one that has had that done recently. You can budget in $2k for winter tires and rims too. Four wheel drive gets you going in slippery conditions, but 3 tons of Coventry's finest takes some stopping, so you need all the winter grip you can get.
Good luck!
