I learned that here in Brazil the VW Amarok uses 18" steel wheels for some of the commercial versions of the truck. I'll see if I can put my hands on one and confirm if it clears the brake calipers or if they need spacers. They also use the 5x120 lug pattern, so if it clears everything, it would be a no-spacer affair.

    EDIT

This is the wheel. It's 18" steel, looks a lot like the Defender one.

and this is a beetle with one of those. They look stupidly large

Very interesting. Staying tuned. You sure those wheels on the beetle are the same? They look different.

VW makes chrome hub caps that snap in to do that to the steelies. Those pop right off. My position on these wheels though is: If they do fit, they are likely not rated for the load of the LR4. The amarok probably isn't even close to the weight of the LR4.

Yeah, LR wheels are rated nearly 200kg higher than that. I wouldn't go down this path...

Yeah, I noticed the load rate is really low, I might check if there is any way to improve on that and I'm also aware that the declared load rate and limit load rate are different.
VW engineer friend of mine assured me those steelies can handle way more because they are also used on the VW Transporter T32 and that van has a load capacity of 1,244kg, GVW of 3,200kg + 75kg of overload capacity.
The disco is pretty close at 3,260 GVW. All in all the capacity for these wheels are more than declared by VW.

I'll test-fit them anyway, at least to see if they will even clear the brake calipers.

has anyone just looked up the spec of the new defender steel wheel? It is an 18" which will clear the calipers and it should be 5x120 so all we really need to find out is: what is the offset? anything 42-45 would be fine on the lr4.

We aren't really sure what the specs are for the brakes on the P300 Defender. It could be that they are the same as the LR3's, in which case the steel wheels may not fit on the LR4.
