Wife wants to use my Rover

...Laura, curious, how does your husband feel about you having the LR3 vs. his P38? Is he burning with envy....yet?

He loves the P38. It's in great shape with just 70K miles, but it has enough quirks for him to work on...he just changed the loose front lights, for example. My LR3 is a shiny, perfect machine, so there isn't much we can do with it but stand back and admire

The LR3 is far from "perfect" as it has its many quirks too....but it sure is nice! Kicks A$$ offroad, too...which surprises a lot of the folks who swear only by the older Rovers. From what I've heard the Discovery had to go through the same bullcrap when it first came out.

So, what you would say if I were nervous about letting my husband drive MY LR3??

It took my wife a few months to warm up to the LR3 - she's not a big fan of the size, but given that she was driving a Mini Cooper S when we bought it last year, I understand (heck, she though my BMW coupe was too big!). However, with a 2 month old and a 2 year old, she opted to get rid of the Mini and now has the LR3 as her DD, though I steal it when I get chance evening and weekends. It's now growing on her nicely, and we seem to be dragging half the street around with us each weekend to parks and camps - definitely the vehicle of choice compared to the neighbor's minivans!

We are planning on doing one of the LR experience trips next spring/summer once the baby is a bit more mobile and can be shipped off to the grandparents for a day or so. As it stands, if we're offroad I'm the only one driving, and as much as I prefer driving it's always more fun to fight about who gets to drive!

My wife is now the primary driver of our LR3, unless we are driving together, then I take the helm.

She even learned how to use terrain response last winter (not bad after 4+ years, eh? )

hey gtc, just keep her away from the M3 if you find one! I was looking at '09s recently and dammit the test car had M-DTC and now she knows she could drive it too!

Hay I only get to drive the LR when she wants gas. And I have to wrap the thing in Vinyl just to take it on the trail. She didn't even want to look at them when I was getting it.

My wife is a pretty decent stick shift driver, so opting for a manual doesn't help me much; our stick shift supercharged Mini was a present for her a few years back since she'd been driving the "less fun" vehicle for the last few years (babies, dogs, etc, etc) and had always wanted a Mini. She can also be relatively agressive, loosing me if I'm tailing her in the BMW in the corners, though I'd catch up to her on the straights pretty quickly.... Even with trucks, she was seeking out the rare 5-speeds until we hit our first Land Rover - a Freelander; she went for a year on an automatic before we had the Mini and didn't seem to mind too much; she thought that an auto might also be easier with kids, or in an emergency when we needed someone else to drive.

The only thing that would keep her away would be a sloppy shifter; she find my BMW acceptable at best (and I can't help but agree), and basically refuses to drive Mercedes after trying out a few and finding them terribly vague...

My only "hope" that I can see is potentially picking up a convertible as she's not a big fan of having her hair blown around, or buying another Mini (which she's hinted at might be a good idea in another year - and it's only been gone for a month or so!), but we don't really have good space for more then two cars...

All in all, I'm not sweating the situation! ;-)

The Wife Drives My LR3

A few minutes ago my wife said "My [LR2] doesn't have enough seats for the grandkids so I'm taking your car to the mall". All I could do is nod and smile. I thought I was more enlightened, but it was amazingly difficult to keep a straight face and not jump up and say "OK I'll drive" and end up in the mall all afternoon. Now she's out with my truck and I'm having withdrawals. I know that she won't hurt it, but I don't want it unavailable to me. I'm sure a shrink would have a blast with this one.

Yeah - when I'm not at the helm and the wife is behind the wheel somewhere, I can't think straight. I know she's going to baby it but it's still my baby and I worry. Sorry to all the wives but it's an LR thing. Oh...one more thing...if the wife wants to trade in her car for an LR....I'm behind that 100%!!
