Yes, correct. Logged a complaint, they assign a case number, then you negotiate with their adjuster. Conversely you could also join this class action suit: https://www.kgglaw.com/class-action/land-rover-and-jaguar-timing-chain-defect-class-action/

Or check your state laws for consumer protection. If LRNA had not done anything, I was going to file a 93A claim in MA, leveraging the TSB, etc for background.

I think your main battle with the LRNA route will be your mileage. They tried to push back ******* me for 80K miles, but then they adjuster/agent also claimed it "was the first time we've ever heard of this issue....". It is worth a try, if for no other reason than to make a decision about how you want to pursue it.

Very helpful. Thanks!

So, for fun ;) I got in touch with the class action lawyers and it is tied to specific states though they are interested in representatives in new states. It is still not clear whether you have to have a timing chain failure first in order to qualify or you can go with the "it's going to fail" claim, yet.

My understanding is the dealer/tech's start by replacing just the tensioners, checking the chain for stretch/damage. They keep the same chain if it passes and then check the timing once buttoned up. I asked mine to replace the chain considering they were already in there.

Thanks. And replacing the tensioners is a few hundred dollar job - that sound accurate?

That's hard to say. Maybe at the local garage/rate. You still have to disassemble nearly all of the same stuff.

Replacing the tensioners alone is still a fairly involved job. I had looked at doing that back before I had my dealer do the whole shebang under warranty.

For example, it's pretty much "off book" to save time by merely loosening the valve covers and prying them up to remove the timing cover. Not sure a dealer would do it that way. An additional issue with that approach is that it's impossible to check to see if the chain has stretched as a lot of the chain is still enclosed. You could conceivably change the tensioners but still have a chain that stretched over normal. To take the engine apart enough to check whether there's been any stretch in the chain, you've got the engine apart enough to do the whole job. The only price difference then is just the cost of parts.

PFunk951 took his into the same dealer as I had mine done at. He only needed his tensioners replaced, and it was still over 19 hours of labor:

Even if you were certain (for whatever reason) that the chain was not stretched and did the "off book" method of loosening, but not removing the valve covers, I don't see how this job could be done cheaply. The cost of parts alone (minus the chain) is several hundred dollars: https://www.roverparts.com/parts/TCK5030

Edit: I mistakenly typed "head" when I meant "valve cover."

Just an FYI folks, you can verify whether or not your vehicle is effected by the TSB LTB00474NAS3: You can call Land Rover directly @ 1-800-637-6837 and speak with a representative. Explain the situation and reference the TSB, then provide the rep with the last eight numbers of your VIN. If this TSB or other TSB's including recalls are associated with your vechicle VIN #, then the representative would see it in their LR computer system and they would tell you so. If not, then you are OK. You can also verify TSB's and recalls by speaking with one of the service reps at your local LR dealer. They have access to the same LR corporate system... However, if you do hear or notice problems or issues with your LR vehicle, then you should just take it directly to the LR service dept or a LR mechanic. Just trying to help. Cheers-
