That and they are not standard on LR4's destined to any other country that I know of...Either it was a way to use up parts or someone decided that the average customer in the North American market would appreciate them.

I know this is an old thread, but I looked at a used LR4 today that had these things on it and thought the same thing. Not a fan of them. It looks like a boat.... But they are hideous. You can't make these trucks look good with any wheel setup with those asinine boat-side runners. These things have a 7,000lb curb weight, they're f'ing heavy and built. Those running boards are only going to come into play if you get hit by a small sedan, they're so low..
Maybe I'm skewed because I built custom Wranglers for ten years; most of the time running 37-40" tires with no doors much less no running boards.
Take 'em off.

Thanks. I'm looking at 2013s, so before it was standard equipment....You may run into safety problems if you ever have an accident and a passenger is injured, Land Rover probably will not stand behind their product, and there might be a questions from your insurance carrier.

Lucky8 has a couple nice options....I am digging getting rid of the running boards, now time to source some good looking and functional sliders.
You will not be missing any trim by removing the running boards. You do have to remove some trim but it has plastic push in clips that just reinstall in the same holes. I removed my running boards after the first winter to undercoat the running board frame and reinstalled them. I am going thru my second winter since removing them and need to touch up the undercoating on these frames but they aren't as bad as with the factory finish.
