    brake job, sigh

Its true. The hubs and rotor come off in one unit. There are 4 bolts (I think) that need to be removed and they can be a ***** to get off if you dont have an impact wrench handy. The outer wheel bearings and a few washers come out with the removal process. Its a great opportunity to not only...

The shop says ignore the ticking or sell it...

First thing, drop the pan and check the oil pickup tube. These usually get clogged up real good. Get a new one if its real dirty. When reinstalling, use some locktite on the bolts. While the pan is off, clean it real good as well. If this doesnt do it, remove valve covers and check torque...

    Brake pad question

As luck would have it, the inside pad on the passenger caliper was down to the metal. The rotor was grooved pretty good and none of the parts houses in town carried the rotors. So, I have them on order. In the meantime I went ahead and put in the pads, even on the bad rotor cause its my daily...

    Brake pad question

Well, its time for brake pads on the D1. Is it necessary to install new rotors, or can I just replace the pads and go? For some reason, I have always turned or replaced rotors on other vehicles. I think it was my crazy father that said it was bad for both pads and rotors if you put new pads...

    Shifter tape access

Nevermind, I fixed. What a PITA! Had to remove the console and get under the shifter bezel.

    Shifter tape access

Does anyone know how to access the shifter tape on a D1 automatic. Its the black strip of plastic that moves with the shifter. Somehow, the black square gadget that secures the tape to the shifter lever got dislodged and the indicator isnt lined up properly. Thanks, John

K&N Air Filter / Borla Exhaust

If you can see through the K$N, imagine whats getting through to the engine. I personally think its a waste of money and convinced there is no "seat of the pants" gain in power. Im old fashioned I guess and like the piece of mind when putting on a new filter every 6k. The K$N oil filters...

    Disco Upgrades (Wife got upset)

I believe its called Stumps Cave. I will try to get the coordinates for you and directions. That trip was the first time I was out there and cant spit out the details on the directions. But, I will try to get them either after this trip or before. It definitely was a fun trip and cant wait...

    Disco Upgrades (Wife got upset)

Yep, no caves in Kansas. No trees for that matter. I grew up in Hutchinson, KS back in the 80s and there were a couple of good spots, but the town has expanded so much that they are all occupied. The Ark river had some good wheeling spots. SE KS was good for offroading.

    Disco Upgrades (Wife got upset)

Im a postin fool today! Tell me why the air intake? Looking for more power? Are you gonna drag race that thing or wheel it. Last time I saw you the truck sounded like a stroked small block chevy rippin throug the woods. I would be worried about water getting sucked up that filter during a...

    Disco Upgrades (Wife got upset)

Which reminds me Joey. We are planning another trip to Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge on 2/26. Tentatively, we are planning on getting there around 9-11a and wheeling till dark, then camp, then wheel out of the woods and go home. Here is the campsite. Its a cave that you can drive the trucks...

    Disco Upgrades (Wife got upset)

I had to sell most of my toys prior to going to med school. Now all I have is my Disco and one 67 GTO left. The goat is in storage back home in Alabama, so the Disco is my only outlet for stress relief. Well, I also play a little tennis but cant find anyone around here decent enough to hit...

    Winch bumper options (?)

Forgot to mention, the DII in the pic above has OME springs/shocks Here's a shot of my baby with the RTE and warn version. OME HD spring/shocks.

    Winch bumper options (?)

One other thing to consider. Mike mentioned adding a suspension to handle the winch. This is definitely worth considering. Adding the weight of a winch and bumper/DAP mount your front will drop at least an inch on stock springs. Im not saying you need to rush out and get aftermarket...

    noisey lifters on right side..

When the motor is cold, start it up and place your hand around the exhaust manifold and feel for leaks. The gasket that mounts the manifold to the exhaust pipe is also prone to leak. Sometimes you can tighten the bolts for a quick fix. Good luck

    noisey lifters on right side..

Are you sure its valvetrain noise and not a cracked exhaust manifold, blown exhaust manifold gasket, or loose plug? These sometimes mimic valvetrain noise and do get louder upon throttle.

    Oil Pan removal

It can be done on ramps. Yep, you'll have to remove the stabilizer and sway bar. Just unbolt the sway bar bolts at the end of the bars and it should just swing down. Of course, drain the oil first. This would be a good time to run a can of engine flush prior to draining the oil and dropping...

Armchair mechanic challenge: Help diagnose this!

I would start by ruling out fuel pump. Check fuel pressure at the rail. What do the plugs look like right after the problem. Fouled? Gas soaked? Clean? Is it smoking when idling bad? Ive seen a blown head gasket cause small amounts of coolant to leak into a cylinder when not running and...

would it be a waste to replace my steering stabalizer

I guess Im late, but it would be a good time to consider relocating the stabilizer up front if you do much offroading. Reason why I say this, is I crushed mine on a rock last night and could turn the wheels. Had to take it off using a leatherman and a bunch of curse words. I ordered a...

    helpful info

What is the big deal with the K$N fitlers? The idea of a reusable air filter is about like a reusable oil filter. Waste of money in my opinion and will most likely do more harm than good. I enjoy the piece of mind that comes with replacing the NAPA air filter at semi-frequent intervals. But...
