FWIW, Drove 490ish miles today, remained at posted speed limits on the highway and thru the towns, averaged 23.3mpg for the whole day. When I stopped to fill up, trip computer was showing 22 miles to empty, and I was able to put 19.7GL in, so the 1ish GL remaining that the trip computer was tracking, plus the 19.7 that I put in, and the 2 hidden GL = 22.8(ish). I also loaded two PID's,Distance to Empty, and Fuel Remaining (GL). When the trip computer was showing 22 miles to empty, the PID was displaying around 70 miles to empty, and the Fuel Remaining PID was showing 3-4GL remaining, can't remember the exact. This makes since that around 2 GL are not tracked by the on-board.

The PID's seem to track the 22.8 tank, while the onboard computer tracks around 20GL, so I am guessing we have around 2GL that are not tracked by the onboard trip computer, giving a nice buffer to empty.

I'll try to get more specific numbers on my return trip.

I was thinking I had a 19-20gl fuel tank, until I looked in the manual the other day, then began the analysis. Looks like it is in fact 22.8....

If the gauge says I’m about to run out of fuel and I can only put in 19 gallons, it’s a 20 gallon tank as far as I’m concerned.

Oh man. The first few pages of this thread is a trip down memory lane of once-regular posters who aren't regulars any more.

You have to remember, the fuel tank is about 5' long.
Two gallons of fuel is only about 1/2" deep.
I’m wondering if that’s why LR designed on-board computer, and gauge to ignore remaining 2GL, or they just wanted to add an idiot buffer.

Idiot buffer. I’m sure most car manufacturers do this. Even Teslas have an idiot buffer on their batteries.

Fuel is also difficult to measure when the tank isn’t shaped like a perfect square/rectangle.

A level of 50% in the tank might not indicate 50% of your fuel capacity.

Rover Range brings a good point that scares me: if I'm in the hills on a low tank, at what point do I risk running the pump dry and stalling? Almost happened to me on the Smoor Overlanding Rally, so I installed an Idiot buffer buffer!
