Sounds like more bad luck, Melissa -- you're the only person I've heard from on here or DWeb who had a negative experience with Magna Donnelly....it'll be worth it when the new (free) mirror arrives!

Sorta like the wires on the Hella 500 lights, Moose...
This is the full letter that was mailed to me.

Dear Ms. Nance:

I was forwarded your letter regarding the issue with your 1998 Land Rover
mirror assembly. I am investigating the exact type of mirror that is on
your vehicle in order to provide you a replacement mirror. As soon as I
have more information I will again contact you with more details.

Best regards,

Cheryl Johnson

Limit to age?

I have a 96 with similar mirror issue, and I plan on contacting them. I'm concerned they may say the 96 is to old and they won't replace it. Should I fib and say it's a 98, or will they replace a 96 mirror?

About a year ago I had absolutely no problem with getting a replacement mirror for a 96 D1.

So the SAGA continues

Dear Melissa:

I am working with our overseas facility who originally produced the mirror.
We built a variety of mirrors for Land Rover and we are trying to determine
exactly which mirror is used on your Land Rover model.

Could you please check the mounting area on your mirror to determine if the
part that attaches to the button on the windshield is metal or plastic? If
it is plastic it will have a single mount option. If it is metal you will
see a metal bracket with two plastic covers attached. Since we made both
options we need to understand which option is on your vehicle.

One other option would be for you to check with a dealer for the
replacement part number for your mirror. If you send me the part number it
would help narrow down the correct part.

Once I am able to obtain the correct mirror and send it to you I would like
to have you send your old mirror back to me. We evaluate the issues with
returned product to determine areas of concern for future products.

Best regards,

Cheryl Johnson

That is truly surprising, although with the flood of requests they got ~2 years ago through DiscoWeb, and probably another thanks to this site, I would guess it'd be understandable. They probably only make a certain number a year given the prevalence of other vehicle makes, and maybe they ran out!

NOT defending Magna Donnelly here, just an observation. And, FWIW, Magna Donnelly's plant in Michigan is not real big...

Of Course not. So does anybody know the part number by chance? Henry is a 1998 D1 4.0L. Thanks for the help ! Melissa

Two comments, Melissa. Well. Three actually :)

- it sucks. I feel for you, looks like my curse with warranties jumped on you now... :(
- beads - good grief. In Russia you 'd be stopped right away by dude in uniform - there are laws against putting things in there that are blocking vision. How you manage to drive with them? :)
- no hat suits you more :)
